Exhibition on Jan 3 through March 18. Gallery talk and reception Jan 26th, 5-7pm.

A solo exhibition of my work from this past year spent photographing the shipping industry is up on the walls in Schenectady, New York at Union College’s Atrium Gallery. Many thanks to Professor David Ogawa and renaissance man Frank Rapant for helping make this exhibition happen. I just received a box of very large showcards from the gallery so please shoot me an email if you would like to receive one in the mail, or in person.
I will be giving a gallery talk January 26th from 5-7pm, please stop by if your in the area. If you are one my many friends from my year of international travel, thank you so much for making this all possible, your assistance along the way was invaluable.
The press release reads as follows:
The Department of Visual Arts is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs by James Burleigh Morton, Union class of 2010. James Burleigh Morton was one of Union’s Thomas J. Watson Fellows for 2010-2011. This prestigious fellowship funded a year-long project of travel photographing the global shipping industry using a large-format 4×5 camera. Morton’s photographs, exhibited here in printed form for the first time, take us across several continents, from South Korea to Australia, and from India to Romania. The wide range of works exhibited here reveals the depth of the photographer’s fascination with the many dimensions of contemporary maritime shipping. Morton shows us everything from ship-building to ship salvage, from monumental vessels to everyday details. He also introduces us to the human side of this complex industry with a series of engaging portraits. The stunning digital prints are incredibly rich in detail, color, and texture. They show this young photographer’s dedication to the medium of photography, his passionate interest in maritime culture, and his ability to captivate the eye with form and color.

NY Times photojournalist Tyler Hicks on scene for pirate raid
NY Times photojournalist, Tyler Hicks, was on board a U.S. Navy vessel during an operation to capture Somali pirates off the coast of Oman. The story has greater significance because those same Somali Pirates were holding a party of Iranian fishermen hostage.

From a wall in Sydney. I’m guessing North Burleigh is in Queensland, I am also guessing that North Burleigh is a very rad place. These two guys have that Hasselhoff-chic thing down.

In the midst of a whirlwind tour of the tri-state area. Got some match racing in this past weekend as well as an unprecedented Thanksgiving weekend trip to the Pequot House on Fishers. Then it was off to Greenwich to see friends from Istanbul, thanks for having me at your wonderful soiree. Now it is off to Schenectady to put together this winter show. All of this is preferred to the four weeks of spotting negatives in photoshop.
On the topic of Istanbul, check out current Watson Fellow, Allison Swaim’s blog on Transom.org- “A Showcase & Workshop for New Public Radio.” Allison is working on a project very similar to my own but doing it through the medium of radio. She is doing an amazing job with it, check out her blog here.
